Shloka 1

Transliteration

Kalyāṇa mandiram udāram avadya bhedi
bhītābhaya pradam aninditam aṅghri padmam
Saṃsāra sāgara nimajjad aśeṣa jantu
potāyamānam abhinamya jineśvarasya || 1 ||

Meaning: Salutations to the Refuge

I offer my salutations to the lotus feet of Lord Jina (Pārśvanātha). His feet are the vast temple of welfare, the destroyer of sins, and the granter of fearlessness to those terrified by worldly existence. They act as a ship for all living beings drowning in the ocean of Samsara.


Shloka 2

Transliteration

Yasya svayaṃ suragurur garimāmburāśeḥ
stotraṃ suvistṛta matir na vibhur vidhātum
Tīrtheśvarasya kamaṭha smaya dhūmaketoḥ
tasyāham eṣa kila saṃstavanaṃ kariṣye || 2 ||

Meaning: The Resolve to Praise

Even Brihaspati, the preceptor of the gods, despite his vast intellect, is unable to fully compose a hymn worthy of your ocean like greatness. Yet, I intend to praise you, O Lord of Tīrthas, who acted as a comet fire to burn the arrogance of the demon Kamaṭha.


Shloka 3

Transliteration

Sāmānyato api tava varṇayituṃ svarūpam
asmādṛśāḥ katham adhīśa bhavanty adhīśāḥ
Dhṛṣṭo api kauśika śiśur yadi vā divāndho
rūpaṃ prarūpayati kiṃ kila gharmaraśmeḥ || 3 ||

Meaning: Human Incapacity

O Lord! How can people like me describe your nature when we cannot even grasp it in a general sense? Can the young one of an owl, which is blind by day, describe the form of the sun?


Shloka 4

Transliteration

Mohakṣayād anubhavann api nātha martyo
nūnaṃ guṇān gaṇayituṃ na tava kṣameta
Kalpānta vānta payasaḥ prakaṭo api yasmān
mīyeta kena jaladher anu ratnarāśiḥ || 4 ||

Meaning: Countless Virtues

Even if a person has destroyed delusion (Moha) and perceives your virtues, they cannot count them. Who can measure the heap of gems in the ocean, even if the ocean’s water were to dry up during the dissolution of the world?


Shloka 5

Transliteration

Abhyudyato asmi tava nātha jaḍāśayo api
kartuṃ stavaṃ lasad asaṅkhya guṇākarasya
Bālo api kiṃ na nija bāhu yugaṃ vitatya
vistīrṇatāṃ kathayati sva dhiyāmburāśeḥ || 5 ||

Meaning: Childlike Enthusiasm

O Lord! Though I am dull witted, I am ready to praise you, the mine of resplendent virtues. Does a child not stretch out its arms in an attempt to describe the vastness of the ocean?


Shloka 6

Transliteration

Ye yoginām api na yānti guṇā stava eśa
vaktuṃ kathaṃ bhavati teṣu mamāvakāśaḥ
Jātā tad evam asamīkṣita kāriteyaṃ
jalpanti vā nija girā nanu pakṣiṇo api || 6 ||

Meaning: Unthinking Devotion

Your virtues are beyond the reach of even great Yogis to describe; so where is the scope for me? My attempt is unthinking, yet I proceed because even birds speak in their own dialect, so I speak according to my capacity.


Shloka 7

Transliteration

Āstām acintya mahimā jin saṃstavaste
nāmāpi pāti bhavato bhavato jaganti
Tīvrātapopahata pānthajanān nidāghe
prīṇāti padmasarasaḥ saraso anilo api || 7 ||

Meaning: The Power of the Name

Leave aside your hymn, which has unimaginable glory; even your name alone protects living beings from the cycle of birth and death. Just as the cool breeze from a lotus lake comforts travelers scorched by heat, not just the water itself.


Shloka 8

Transliteration

Hṛdvartini tvayi vibho śithilībhavanti
jantoḥ kṣaṇena nibiḍā api karmabandhāḥ
Sadyo bhujaṅgamamayā iva madhyabhāgam
abhyāgate vana śikhaṇḍini candanasya || 8 ||

Meaning: Loosening Karmic Bonds

O Lord! When you reside in the heart, the tight bonds of Karma loosen instantly. Just as snakes wrapped around a sandalwood tree loosen their grip the moment a peacock arrives.


Shloka 9

Transliteration

Mucyanta eva manujāḥ sahasā jinendra
raudrair upadrava śatais tvayi vīkṣite api
Gosvāmini sphurita tejasi dṛṣṭamātre
caurair iva paśavaḥ prapalāyamānaiḥ || 9 ||

Meaning: Freedom from Calamities

Mere sight of you frees humans from terrible calamities instantly. Just as cattle are released by thieves the moment they see the powerful owner or king approaching.


Shloka 10

Transliteration

Tvaṃ tārako jin kathaṃ bhavināṃ ta eva
tvām udvahanti hṛdayena yad uttarantaḥ
Yadvā dṛtis tarati yaj jalam eṣa nūnam
antargatasya marutaḥ sa kila anubhāvaḥ || 10 ||

Meaning: The Saviour

O Jina! You are called the Saviour, yet it is the living beings who carry you in their hearts that cross the ocean of existence. This is like a leather bag floating in water. It floats because of the air held inside it.


Shloka 11

Transliteration

Yasmin Haraprabhṛtayo api hataprabhāvāḥ
so api tvayā ratipatiḥ kṣapitaḥ kṣaṇena
Vidhyāpitā hutabhujaḥ payasātha yena
pītaṃ na kiṃ tad api durdhara vāḍavena || 11 ||

Meaning: Victor over Passion

You destroyed Cupid (Desire), who had defeated even powerful deities like Hari (Vishnu) and Hara (Shiva). This is not surprising, for the submarine fire (Badavanala) drinks up the very water that extinguishes ordinary fires.


Shloka 12

Transliteration

Svāmin analpa garimāṇam api prapannāḥ
tvāṃ jantavaḥ katham aho hṛdaye dadhānāḥ
Janmodadhiṃ laghu taranty ati lāghavena
cintyo na hanta mahatāṃ yadi vā prabhāvaḥ || 12 ||

Meaning: The Weight of Glory

It is a wonder that devotees, holding you who are heavy with immense greatness in their hearts, cross the ocean of birth with extreme lightness and ease. Or perhaps, the power of the great is beyond logical contemplation.


Shloka 13

Transliteration

Krodhas tvayā yadi vibho prathamaṃ nirasto
dhvastās tadā vada kathaṃ kila karmacaurāḥ
Ploṣaty amutra yadi vā śiśirā api loke
nīladrumāṇi vipināni na kiṃ himānī || 13 ||

Meaning: Conqueror without Anger

If you had already destroyed anger, how did you then destroy the thieves of Karma? The answer is that even cold frost burns and destroys forests; one does not need heat to destroy.


Shloka 14

Transliteration

Tvāṃ yogino jin sadā paramātmarūpam
anveṣayanti hṛdayāmbuja kośadeśe
Pūtasya nirmala ruceḥ yadi vā kim anyat
akṣasya sambhava padaṃ nanu karṇikāyāḥ || 14 ||

Meaning: The Seat of the Soul

Yogis always seek you, the Supreme Soul, in the lotus of their heart. Indeed, where else would the seed of the pure lotus be found if not within the lotus itself?


Shloka 15

Transliteration

Dhyānāj jineśa bhavato bhavinaḥ kṣaṇena
dehaṃ vihāya paramātma daśāṃ vrajanti
Tīvrānalād upala bhāvam apāsya loke
cāmīkaratvam acirād iva dhātubhedāḥ || 15 ||

Meaning: Transformation

By meditating on you, living beings attain the state of the Supreme Soul (Paramatma), leaving behind the body. Just as stones attain the state of gold through intense fire.


Shloka 16

Transliteration

Antaḥ sadaiva jin yasya vibhāvyase tvaṃ
bhavyaiḥ kathaṃ tad api nāśayase śarīram
Etat svarūpam atha madhya vivartino hi
yad vigrahaṃ praśamayanti mahānubhāvāḥ || 16 ||

Meaning: Liberating the Self

Why do you destroy the body of the devotee who holds you constantly in their heart? Perhaps it is the nature of the great to resolve the conflict (Vigraha meaning body) where they reside.


Shloka 17

Transliteration

Ātmā manīṣibhir ayaṃ tvad abheda buddhyā
dhyāto jinendra bhavatīha bhavat prabhāvaḥ
Pānīyam api amṛtam ity anucintyamānaṃ
kiṃ nāma no viṣa vikāram apākaroti || 17 ||

Meaning: Oneness in Meditation

When wise men meditate on their soul as non distinct from you, it becomes powerful like you. Just as water, when chanted over with the idea that this is nectar, gains the power to remove poison.


Shloka 18

Transliteration

Tvām eva vītatamasaṃ paravādino api
nūnaṃ vibho hari hara ādi dhiyā prapannāḥ
Kiṃ kāca kāmali bhir īśa sito api śaṅkho
no gṛhyate vividha varṇa viparyayeṇa || 18 ||

Meaning: Universal Recognition

Even followers of other paths worship you, the Passionless One, mistakenly seeing you as Hari, Hara, or others. Just as a person with jaundice perceives a white conch shell as having various colors.


Shloka 19 : The Ashoka Tree (Pratiharya)

Transliteration

Dharmopadeśa samaye savidhānubhāvād
āstāṃ jano bhavati te tarur api aśokaḥ
Abhyudgate dina patau sama hīruho api
kiṃ vā vibodham upayāti na jīvalokaḥ || 19 ||

Meaning: The Ashoka Tree 

During your sermon, even the tree near you becomes Ashoka, sorrow less. It is no wonder then that living beings near you attain knowledge and wakefulness, just as the world wakes upon the sun’s rising.


Shloka 20 : Rain of Flowers (Pratiharya)

Transliteration

Citraṃ vibho katham avāṅmukha vṛntam eva
viṣvak pataty aviralā sura puṣpa vṛṣṭiḥ
Tvad gocare sumanasāṃ yadi vā munīśa
gacchanti nūnam adha eva hi bandhanāni || 20 ||

Meaning: Rain of Flowers

Celestial flowers fall with their stems facing downward. This signifies that in your presence, the karmic bondages of the good hearted inevitably fall and are destroyed.


Shloka 21: Divine Voice (Pratiharya)

Transliteration

Sthāne gabhīra hṛdayodadhi sambhavāyāḥ
pīyūṣatāṃ tava giraḥ samudīrayanti
Pītvā yataḥ parama sammada saṅga bhājo
bhavyā vrajanti tarasā api ajarāmaratvam || 21 ||

Meaning: Divine Voice

Your voice, rising from the deep ocean of your heart, is rightly called nectar. Drinking it, worthy souls attain immortality, free from old age and death.


Shloka 22: Fly Whisks (Pratiharya)

Transliteration

Svāmin sudūram avanamya samutpatanto
manye vadanti śucayaḥ sura cāmara oghāḥ
Ye asmai natiṃ vidadhate muni puṅgavāya
te nūnam ūrdhva gatayaḥ khalu śuddha bhāvāḥ || 22 ||

Meaning: Fly Whisks

The celestial fly whisks bow low and then rise high. They proclaim that those who bow down to you will surely rise to the highest state, Moksha.


Shloka 23: The Throne (Pratiharya)

Transliteration

Śyāmaṃ gabhīra giram ujjvala hema ratna
siṃhāsana stham iha bhavya śikhaṇḍinaḥ tvām
Ālokayanti rabhasena nadantam uccaiḥ
cāmīkarādri śirasī iva navāmbuvāham || 23 ||

Meaning: The Throne

Seated on the radiant golden throne, you resemble a rain cloud thundering on Mount Meru. The Bhavyas gaze upon you with the joy of peacocks.


Shloka 24: Halo of Light (Pratiharya)

Transliteration

Udgacchatā tava śiti dyuti maṇḍalena
lupta cchadac chaviḥ aśoka tarur babhūva
Sānnidhyato api yadi vā tava vītarāga
nīrāgatāṃ vrajati ko na sacetana api || 24 ||

Meaning: Halo of Light

Your radiant halo eclipses the redness of the Ashoka tree leaves. Near you, the Passionless One, who would not become free from passion?


Shloka 25: Celestial Drums (Pratiharya)

Transliteration

Bho bhoḥ pramādam avadhūya bhajadhvam enam
āgatya nirvṛti purīṃ prati sārtha vāham
Etan nivedayati deva jagat trayāya
manye nadann abhinabhaḥ sura dundubhiḥ te || 25 ||

Meaning: Celestial Drums

The celestial drum echoes across the three worlds, urging beings to abandon negligence and worship the Lord who leads souls to liberation.


Shloka 26: Three Umbrellas (Pratiharya)

Transliteration

Udyotiteṣu bhavatā bhuvaneṣu nātha
tārānvito vidhur ayaṃ vihatādhikāraḥ
Muktā kalāpa kalitollasita ātapatra
vyājāt tridhā dhṛta tanuḥ dhruvam abhyupetaḥ || 26 ||

Meaning: Three Umbrellas

The moon, having lost its authority to shine, comes to serve you as three umbrellas adorned with stars.


Shloka 27: Three Ramparts

Transliteration

Svena prapūrita jagat traya piṇḍitena
kānti pratāpa yaśasām iva sañcayena
Māṇikya hema rajata pravinirmitena
sāla trayena bhagavan abhito vibhāsi || 27 ||

Meaning: Three Ramparts

The three jeweled ramparts appear as the embodiment of your brilliance, valor, and fame filling the three worlds.


Shloka 28: Celestial Garlands

Transliteration

Divya srajo jin namat tridaśādhipānām
utsṛjya ratna racitān api mauli bandhān
Pādau śrayanti bhavato yadi vā paratra
tvatsaṅgame sumanaso na ramanta eva || 28 ||

Meaning: Celestial Garlands

Garlands fall from the crowns of Indras at your feet, for noble souls find joy nowhere else but in your presence.


Shloka 29: Paradox of the Savior

Transliteration

Tvaṃ nātha janma jaladher viparāṅmukho api
yat tārayasy asumato nija pṛṣṭha lagnān
Yuktaṃ hi pārthiva nṛpasya sataḥ tava eva
citraṃ vibho yad asi karma vipāka śūnyaḥ || 29 ||

Meaning

Though indifferent to worldly existence, you help souls cross it. A divine paradox beyond logic.


Shloka 30: Divine Paradoxes

Transliteration

Viśveśvaro api jana pālaka durgatas tvaṃ
kiṃ vā akṣara prakṛtir api alipiḥ tvam īśa
Ajñānavaty api sadaiva kathañcid eva
jñānaṃ tvayi sphurati viśva vikāsa hetuḥ || 30 ||

Meaning

You are Lord of the universe yet unattainable. Imperishable yet unwritten. Protector of the ignorant yet embodiment of knowledge.


Shloka 31: Victory over Kamaṭha’s Dust

Transliteration

Prāgbhāra sambhṛta nabhāṃsi rajāṃsi roṣāt
utthāpitāni kamaṭhena śaṭhena yāni
Chāyā api tais tava na nātha hatā hatāśo
grastaḥ tvam ībhir ayam eva paraṃ durātmā || 31 ||

Meaning

The dust raised by the demon Kamaṭha in anger could not even touch your shadow or radiance. Instead, that wretch himself was crushed by it, his own karma turning against him.


Shloka 32: Victory over Rain

Transliteration

Yad garjad ūrjita ghanaugham adabhrabhīmaṃ
bhraśyat taḍin musala māṃsala ghoradhāram
Daityena muktam atha dustara vāri dadhre
tenaiva tasya jin dustara vārikṛtyam || 32 ||

Meaning

The terrible rain and thunder unleashed by the demon acted like a double edged sword against himself, causing him sin, while you remained unharmed.


Shloka 33: Victory over Ghosts

Transliteration

Dhvastordhva keśa vikṛtākṛti martya muṇḍa
prālamba bhṛd bhaya davaktra viniryad agniḥ
Pretavrajaḥ prati bhavantam apīrito yaḥ
so asyābhavat pratibhavaṃ bhavaduḥkha hetuḥ || 33 ||

Meaning

The terrifying army of ghosts sent by Kamaṭha, breathing fire and wearing skulls, became the cause of his own suffering in every birth.


Shloka 34: The Blessed Devotees

Transliteration

Dhanyās ta eva bhuvanādhipa ye trisandhyam
ārādhayanti vidhivad vidhutānya kṛtyāḥ
Bhaktyollasat pulaka pakṣmala deha deśāḥ
pāda dvayaṃ tava vibho bhuvi janma bhājaḥ || 34 ||

Meaning

Blessed are those in this world who, abandoning other actions, worship your feet three times a day with devotion, their bodies covered in horripilation of joy.


Shloka 35: The Protective Name

Transliteration

Asmin napāra bhava vārinidhau munīśa
manye na me śravaṇa gocaratāṃ gato asi
Ākarṇite tu tava gotra pavitra mantre
kiṃ vā vipad viṣadharī savidhaṃ sameti || 35 ||

Meaning

I believe I have never heard your name in the endless ocean of Samsara. For if one hears your purifying name mantra, the snake of calamity cannot approach.


Shloka 36: Consequences of Non Worship

Transliteration

Janmāntare api tava pāda yugaṃ na deva
manye mayā mahitam īhita dāna dakṣam
Teneha janmani munīśa parābhavānāṃ
jāto niketanam ahaṃ mathitāśayānām || 36 ||

Meaning

I believe I did not worship your wish fulfilling feet in previous lives. That is why, in this life, I have become an abode of humiliations and crushed hopes.


Shloka 37: Lack of Vision

Transliteration

Nūnaṃ na moha timirāvṛta locanena
pūrvaṃ vibho sakṛd api pravilokito asi
Marmāvidho vidhurayanti hi mām anarthāḥ
prodyat prabandha gatayaḥ katham anyathā ete || 37 ||

Meaning

Blinded by the darkness of delusion, I surely did not see you before. Otherwise, how could these heart piercing misfortunes torment me now?


Shloka 38: Lack of True Devotion

Transliteration

Ākarṇito api mahito api nirīkṣito api
nūnaṃ na cetasi mayā vidhṛto asi bhaktyā
Jāto asmi tena jana bāndhava duḥkha pātraṃ
yasmāt kriyāḥ pratiphalanti na bhāva śūnyāḥ || 38 ||

Meaning

Even if I heard, worshiped, or saw you, I surely did not hold you in my heart with true devotion. That is why I am a vessel of misery; actions devoid of feeling yield no fruit.


Shloka 39: Prayer for Mercy

Transliteration

Tvaṃ nātha duḥkhi jana vatsala he śaraṇya
kāruṇya puṇya vasate vaśināṃ vareṇya
Bhaktyā nate mayi maheśa dayāṃ vidhāya
duḥkha aṅkuroddalana tatparatāṃ vidhehi || 39 ||

Meaning

O Lord, friend of the miserable, refuge of all, abode of compassion and merit, have mercy on me who is bowed in devotion, and uproot the sprouts of my sorrow.


Shloka 40: The Need for Meditation

Transliteration

Niḥsaṅkhya sāra śaraṇaṃ śaraṇaṃ śaraṇyam
āsādya sādita ripuḥ prathitāvadānam
Tvat pāda paṅkajam api praṇidhāna vandhyo
vandhyo asmi ced bhuvana pāvana hā hato asmi || 40 ||

Meaning

Having found you, the refuge of the refined and purifier of the world, if I remain devoid of meditation, I am truly unfortunate and lost.


Shloka 41: Cry for Help

Transliteration

Devendra vandya viditākhila vastu sāra
saṃsāra tāraka vibho bhuvana adhinātha
Trāyasva deva karuṇā hṛda māṃ punīhi
sīdantam adya bhaya davyasana amburāśeḥ || 41 ||

Meaning

O Lord worshiped by Indra, knower of the essence of all things, saviour from Samsara, protect me and purify me. I am sinking in the terrifying ocean of misery.


Shloka 42: The Only Wish

Transliteration

Yadi asti nātha bhavad aṅghri saroruhāṇāṃ
bhakteḥ phalaṃ kim api santata sañcitāyāḥ
Tan me tvad eka śaraṇasya śaraṇya bhūyāḥ
svāmī tvam eva bhuvane atra bhavāntare api || 42 ||

Meaning

O Lord, if there is any fruit of my long accumulated devotion to your lotus feet, let it be only this: may you be my Master in this life and in all future lives.


Shloka 43: The Method of Praise

Transliteration

Itthaṃ samāhita dhiyo vidhivad jinendra
sāndra ullasat pulaka kañcukitāṅga bhāgāḥ
Tvad bimba nirmala mukha ambuja baddha lakṣyāḥ
ye saṃstavaṃ tava vibho racayanti bhavyāḥ || 43 ||

Meaning

Those Bhavyas who praise you in this manner, with focused minds, bodies thrilled with devotion, and eyes fixed on your pure face.


Shloka 44: The Final Fruit

Transliteration

Jananayana kumudacandra prabhāsvarāḥ svarga sampadaḥ bhuktvā
Te vigalita mala nicayā acirān mokṣaṃ prapadyante || 44 ||

Meaning

O Moon to the eyes of the people, such devotees, having enjoyed brilliant heavenly pleasures, destroy the mass of Karma and soon attain Liberation (Moksha).
