Jain Mathematics : A Modern Approach

You will read or hear most of these units of measurement while reading karnanuyog or Jain Mathematics.  These are some of the common units used.

  • 1 Angul ≈ 1.3 inch
  • 1 Hath = 24 Angul = 24*1.3 inch = 18 inch = 1.5 feet
  • 1 Dhanush = 4 Hath = 72 inch = 6 feet
  • 1 Kosh = 2000 Dhanush = 2000 * 6 feet = 12000 feet ≈ 3.65 kms ≈ 2.2 miles

Example:

Height of Lord Bahubali was 525 Dhanush. Converting into feet :

Height of Lord Bahubali = 525 * 6 feet = 3150 feet

Yojan & its types:

It can be divided into two:

  • Vyavhar Yojana
  • Praman Yojana

Praman Yojana is 500 times of Vyavhar Yojana.

1 vyavhar yojana = 4 kosh = 8 miles ≈ 12.8 kms = 8000 dhanush = 32,000 hath = 7,68,000 Angul

1 praman yojana = 500 vyavhar yojana = 2,000 vyavhar kosh = 40,00,000 vyavhar dhanush = 1,60,00,000 vyavhar hath = 38,40,00,000 vyvhar angul

 1 praman yojana = 4 praman kosh = 8,000 praman dhanush = 32,000 praman hath = 7,68,000 praman angul

  • 1 praman kosh = 500 vyavhar kosh
  • 1 praman hath = 500 vyavhar hath
  • 1 praman angul = 500 vyavhar angul
  • 1 praman dhanush = 500 vyavhar dhanush
  • 1 praman yojana = 500 vyavhar yojana

What to measure via Vyavhar units?

  • Height of the beings of four realms
  • All unnaturally made creations
  • Height of all naturally made idols
  • Towns of heavenly beings
  • Houses of heavenly beings
  • Forests of heavenly beings

What to measure via Praman units?

  • Apart from all the above mentioned, everything naturally made is measured in Praman.
  • Area of seas and islands
  • Area of three lok
  • Mountains
  • Lakes
  • Trees
  • Planes of celestial beings(moon, stars, etc..)
